Mar Menor is arguably one of Spain’s greatest coastal highlights. As Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, it attracts both tourists and fulltime residents who are looking to enjoy its natural beauty all year round.
La Manga del Mar Menor is the narrow, 22km long strip of land that runs between the salt lagoon and the Mediterranean sea, offering stunning views in whichever direction you look. Due to its second-to-none location, La Manga del Mar Menor has become a hotspot for trendy restaurants, 5* hotels and stunning apartments and villas.
Where is La Manga del Mar Menor?
La Manga del Mar Menor is located on Spain’s Southern Mediterranean coastline. Specifically, it makes up a small part of Murcia’s popular 250km long Costa Calida (meaning ‘Warm Coast’).
Weather in La Manga del Mar Menor
Mar Menor benefits from its own micro-climate. Living up to its location on the ‘Warm Coast’, it offers higher average annual temperatures than many areas of Spain, and lower than average rainfall.
Healing properties of the Mar Menor
Due to its above-mentioned climate and unique mineral concentration (including unusual combinations of calcium, magnesium, iodine and bromide), the Mar Menor has been found to have numerous health benefits and healing properties.
Whether their ailments are physical or psychological, many people visit the Mar Menor specifically to bathe in the salty water (and even the mud) hoping to have their afflictions cured. The Mar Menor is said to be especially effective in aiding rheumatism and arthritis, but also has been noted to have positive effects on skin conditions such as eczema, and even broken bones!
Anyone is welcome to soak in the waters for free, but many of the region’s luxury hotels also offer spa services such as massages, treatments and open-air therapies using the highly-concentrated mud from the waters.
La Manga del Mar Menor’s beach
With one side of La Manga being the salt lagoon, the other is the beach and Mediterranean sea. The stretch of brilliant white sand drives thousands of tourists to the region, meaning that a number of exclusive hotels and newly build residential complexes have sprung up in recent years.
The safe beach and ideal water conditions have also led to the region being popular with water sports enthusiasts, and so there are plenty of diving, surfing and sailing schools in the area to experience.
Things to do in La Manga del Mar Menor
Aside from taking part in water sports, bathing in the salt lagoon or soaking up the sun on the beach, there are still plenty of things to do in La Manga del Mar Menor…
The area is home to many top restaurants, both traditional and modern, offering a fantastic Spanish culinary experience. Restaurants on the popular beach will often have a great value ‘menu del dia’ and snacks, and the more inland restaurants will offer up tasty, hearty, traditional Spanish classics. For a luxury dining experience, you can choose silver service right on the sand during sunset!
Those looking for sports but who aren’t so keen on the water are also in luck. Whilst in La Manga del Mar Menor you can visit some of Spain’s top golf courses including Roda Golf and Los Calinas. Both of these are popular choices for pro golfers, but for more variety, there are actually over 30 golf courses within an hour from La Managa’s sandy beaches.
For those in need of a bit of peace and quiet, there’s nowhere better than the beautiful and completely unspoilt Regional Park of Calblanque. Just next to La Manga del Mar Menor, it makes an ideal day trip. The National Park is made up of deserted beaches, caves to explore, and hiking and cycle trails. Due to its protected status, it remains one of the only remaining untouched coastal areas of Spain – we highly recommend a trip to see it.
